EV Charging Station Subsidy in India: PM E-DRIVE and States
What PM E-DRIVE and state EV policies actually offer charging station owners, who can claim, the caps, and why approval is never guaranteed.

In India, EV charging station subsidies come mainly from state policies, such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka (25% up to ₹10 lakh per fast station) and Uttar Pradesh (20% up to ₹10 lakh), each with caps and conditions and claimed by the station owner. The central PM E-DRIVE scheme is run through government bodies, so a private business cannot apply to it directly, and approval under any scheme is not guaranteed.
All facts below come from official documents, checked on 29 October 2026. Follow the source links before you apply, because rules and remaining slots change.

PM E-DRIVE charging: what private owners need to know
The PM E-DRIVE operational guidelines allow only government ministries, central public sector companies and state nodal agencies to submit proposals. A private site owner or operator takes part only by winning a bid from one of those bodies.
- The charger itself is subsidised only at government sites. Malls, streets and private highway sites can get up to 80% of the power-connection cost only, not the charger.
- Car DC chargers must be 50 to 250 kW CCS2. The 30 kW charger is outside the scheme; the 60 to 240 kW models are within the kW range.
- On 22 July 2026 the government told Parliament that no funds had yet been paid out for charging stations under the scheme, as recorded in the Rajya Sabha reply.
State capital subsidies
The Tamil Nadu EV Policy 2023 offers 25% of equipment and machinery cost (not land), capped at ₹10 lakh per fast station, for the first 200 public fast stations. A public station needs at least 3 chargers and 50 kW active load, and the owner claims after operations start.
The Karnataka Clean Mobility Policy 2025-30 offers 25% up to ₹10 lakh per fast station for 500 stations, with no incentive for slow chargers.
The Uttar Pradesh EV Policy 2022 offers a one-time 20% subsidy up to ₹10 lakh per unit for stations with ₹25 lakh or more fixed investment excluding land, for the first 2,000 stations, paid after commercial operations begin.
GST is not a subsidy, but it matters
GST is 5% on charger equipment and 18% on the charging service billed to drivers. Budget for both.
How to plan around subsidies
Treat any subsidy as a possible bonus, not as part of your funding. Size the project so it works without it, check the conditions for your state, and keep the documents the policy asks for. Then pick a charger from the DC fast charger range, such as the 60 kW charger for a city site. For full budgeting, see our installation cost guide. Frequently asked questions
Can a private business get PM E-DRIVE charging subsidy?
Not directly. Under the PM E-DRIVE operational guidelines, only ministries, central public sector companies and state nodal agencies submit proposals. A private site owner or operator can take part only by winning a bid from one of those bodies. Car DC chargers must be 50 to 250 kW CCS2, so a 30 kW charger is outside the scheme.
Does PM E-DRIVE pay for the charger at a mall?
No. At malls, streets and private highway sites, the scheme covers up to 80% of the power-connection cost only, not the charger. The charger itself is subsidised only at government sites. Even then, the government told Parliament in July 2026 that no funds had yet been paid for charging stations.
What is the Tamil Nadu subsidy for charging stations?
The Tamil Nadu EV Policy 2023 offers eligible public fast stations 25% of equipment and machinery cost, capped at ₹10 lakh per station, for the first 200 public fast stations. A public station needs at least 3 chargers and 50 kW active load. The owner claims it after operations start, and approval is not guaranteed.
Does Pristine AACF apply for the subsidy for me?
No. State subsidies are claimed by the station owner, usually after the station is running, and PM E-DRIVE runs through government bodies. Pristine AACF supplies the charger and provides the equipment documents you need, but we cannot guarantee any approval. Check the official policy for your state before you count on it.
Is a licence needed to run a charging station?
No. The Ministry of Power EV Charging Guidelines 2024 make it a de-licensed activity, provided you follow the guidelines and safety standards. They also set DISCOM connection timelines of 3 to 90 days and cap the charging station tariff at the average cost of supply until 31 March 2028.
