To start an EV charging station business in India you need a site with EV traffic, a DISCOM power connection sized to your charger, the charger itself, and a way to collect payments; no separate licence is required under the Ministry of Power guidelines. You can either run your own station or join a franchise, and Pristine AACF supplies the DC fast charging equipment for the first route; we do not run or sell a charging franchise.
Own station or franchise: what is the difference?
Many searches for ev charging station franchise come from people who want a ready-made business. It helps to separate the two models clearly before you spend money.
| Question | Own station | Franchise |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the charger? | You do | Depends on the franchise contract |
| Who sets the price per kWh? | You, within government rules | Usually the franchisor |
| Who keeps the charging income? | You | Shared as per contract |
| Brand on the charger | Yours | The franchisor's |
| Where Pristine AACF fits | We supply the charger | Not applicable; we do not sell franchises |
Pristine AACF is an equipment supplier. We sell DC fast chargers from 30 kW to 240 kW to businesses that want to own and run their own station. If you are offered a franchise by anyone, read the contract closely and check who owns the equipment and who keeps the income.
Step 1: Pick a site with dwell time and traffic
The best sites are places EV drivers already visit: hotels, hospitals, malls, fuel plazas, highway food stops, cab depots and bus or truck terminals. Match charger size to how long vehicles stay. Our guide on which kW charger suits your site covers this in detail.
Step 2: Check rules and power
The Ministry of Power EV Charging Guidelines 2024 make charging a de-licensed activity: no licence, but you must follow the guidelines and safety standards. The DISCOM should connect you within 3 to 90 days depending on location, and the electricity tariff for charging stations is capped at the average cost of supply until 31 March 2028. The same guidelines set a ceiling on the service charge for public fast charging until March 2028, so confirm your selling price against the guidelines for your state.
Step 3: Choose the charger
- 30 kW charger: single CCS2 gun, about 34 to 36 kVA, for hotels and small sites.
- 60 kW charger: dual CCS2 guns with dynamic sharing, for malls and city hubs.
- 80 to 120 kW: dual gun, for highway stops, fuel plazas and fleet hubs.
- 160 to 240 kW: dual gun, for expressways, bus stops and heavy fleet terminals.
Compare all seven on the DC fast charger page.
Step 4: Set up payments
Every Pristine AACF charger takes UPI QR payments. Drivers scan, pay with any UPI app and charging starts; no driver app is needed. Collections settle to your bank account. OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1 support lets you connect to standard charge-management software if you want it.
What can one charger earn? An estimated example
This is our only earnings example, and it is an estimate. It assumes 10 cars a day each taking 50 kWh. Your result depends on footfall, tariff and site costs, and we do not promise a payback period.
| Per month | Estimated ROI |
|---|---|
| Energy sold | 500 kWh a day × 30 = 15,000 kWh |
| Charging income (₹26 per kWh, excl. GST) | ₹3,90,000 |
| Electricity + maintenance (₹14 per kWh) | ₹2,10,000 |
| Gross margin (₹12 per kWh) | ₹1,80,000 |
The ₹26 per kWh figure is an example only. Station owners should confirm pricing against the Ministry of Power guidelines for their state, and add 18% GST on the charging service billed to drivers.
Step 5: Order and prepare
Delivery is 2 to 3 weeks from payment, with 80% advance and 20% on dispatch. Start your DISCOM connection, earthing, plinth and internet before you order, because a new connection can take longer than delivery. Call or WhatsApp 77089 94055, or 88070 22133, for a site-specific quote.
Your EV charging station business plan
A simple business plan starts with the investment. Budget for the charger quote, the DISCOM power connection and any transformer or cabling work, civil work such as the plinth, canopy and earthing, and a reliable internet connection for payments and monitoring. Ask for each item in writing so you can compare site costs honestly.
Then choose a business model. Most buyers pick one of three:
- Own and operate: you buy the charger, set the tariff within government rules and keep the charging income.
- Host on your land: you provide the site and a partner operator runs the charger under a written agreement. Check who owns the equipment and how income is shared.
- Fleet captive: you charge your own cabs, buses or delivery vehicles, so demand is predictable and you control the schedule.
For revenue, use the Estimated ROI table above as a worked example and replace its assumptions with your own footfall and tariff. It is an estimate, not a promise, and Pristine AACF supplies the equipment only; we are not a franchisor.
Frequently asked questions
Does Pristine AACF offer an EV charging franchise?
No. Pristine AACF supplies DC fast charging equipment; we do not run or sell an EV charging franchise. You buy the charger, own it, set your price within government rules and keep the charging income. We quote the charger and installation per site and deliver across India in 2 to 3 weeks from payment.
Do I need a licence to open a charging station?
No separate licence is needed. The Ministry of Power EV Charging Guidelines 2024 treat setting up and running a charging station as a de-licensed activity, provided you follow the guidelines and safety standards. You still need a suitable DISCOM connection and any local building or fire approvals that apply to your site.
Is an EV charging station profitable?
It can be at a high-footfall site. Our estimated example of 10 cars a day at 50 kWh each sells 15,000 kWh a month, giving about ₹3,90,000 income and about ₹1,80,000 gross margin after electricity and maintenance. Fewer cars mean proportionally less. We do not promise any payback period.
Who sets the price drivers pay?
The station owner sets it, within applicable government rules. The Ministry of Power guidelines set a ceiling on the service charge for public fast charging until March 2028, and 18% GST is added for drivers. Our example uses ₹26 per kWh excluding GST; confirm the right price for your state before launch.
Can I start with one charger?
Yes. Many owners start with one charger and add more as usage grows. A dual-gun model from 60 kW upward serves two vehicles at once from one unit. Note that some state subsidies set minimums, such as Tamil Nadu's three chargers per public station, so check before you plan around a subsidy; approval is not guaranteed.
