AC vs DC EV Charger: Which Should a Business Buy in India?
The difference between AC and DC EV chargers, where each fits, and why businesses selling charging to the public usually choose DC fast chargers.

An AC EV charger sends alternating current to the car, whose onboard charger converts it to DC for the battery, so speed is limited by the car; a DC fast charger does the conversion itself and feeds DC directly to the battery, which allows much higher power. Homes and long-stay parking often use AC, while businesses that sell charging to the public, such as malls, highway stops and fleet depots, usually choose DC fast chargers.
Pristine AACF supplies DC fast chargers only, from 30 kW to 240 kW. This guide explains both types fairly so you can decide which your site needs.
The core difference
A battery stores DC. With AC charging, the conversion from AC to DC happens inside the car, through an onboard charger whose size limits how fast it can charge. With DC charging, the conversion happens inside the charger, so the charger can deliver far more power straight to the battery, within what the car accepts.
| Point | AC charger | DC fast charger |
|---|---|---|
| Where AC is converted to DC | Inside the car | Inside the charger |
| Speed limited by | The car's onboard charger | Charger power and the car's DC limit |
| Typical use | Homes, offices, overnight parking | Public and commercial charging, fleets, highways |
| Connector for cars in India | Varies by charger | CCS2 on all Pristine AACF models |
| Electrical load | Lower | Higher; 34 to 285 kVA across our range |
| PM E-DRIVE car chargers | Not covered | 50 to 250 kW CCS2 within range |
| Service charge ceiling (MoP) | Separate, lower AC ceiling | DC fast ceiling till March 2028 |
When AC is enough
If a car parks for eight hours or more, at home or in an office, an AC charger usually delivers enough energy and needs little load. It is the low-cost option for private, overnight use.
When a business needs DC
- You sell charging to drivers who want to leave quickly, such as at malls, highway stops and fuel plazas.
- You run a fleet of cabs, buses or trucks where turnaround time is money.
- You want two vehicles served from one unit; our 60 to 240 kW models have two CCS2 guns with dynamic power sharing.
- You want UPI QR payments built in, with no driver app.
- You want to qualify for state fast-station subsidies, which in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are for fast stations; approval is not guaranteed.
Even at hotels and hospitals, where stays are long, many businesses choose the 30 kW charger because it charges visitors meaningfully within their stay on a modest 34 to 36 kVA load.
Rules that apply to both
Under the Ministry of Power EV Charging Guidelines 2024, no licence is needed to run a charging station, DISCOMs should connect stations within 3 to 90 days depending on location, and the station tariff is capped at the average cost of supply until 31 March 2028. GST is 5% on charger equipment and 18% on the charging service billed to drivers.
Choosing your DC charger
Start with your site type and spare electrical load. Our guide on which kW charger suits your site maps hotels, malls, highways and terminals to models. Popular choices are the 60 kW charger for city sites and the 120 kW charger for highways. Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between AC and DC chargers?
Where the AC-to-DC conversion happens. An AC charger relies on the car's onboard charger, which limits speed. A DC fast charger converts power itself and feeds DC directly to the battery, allowing much higher power within the car's limits. That makes DC suited to public and commercial charging.
Does Pristine AACF sell AC chargers?
No. Pristine AACF supplies commercial DC fast chargers only, from 30 kW to 240 kW, all with CCS2 connectors, UPI QR payments and OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1. If you need a home AC wall box, a DC fast charger is not the right product for that use.
Is a DC charger always better for a business?
Not always. If vehicles park overnight and you do not sell charging, AC may be enough. If you sell charging to visitors, run a fleet, or serve highway traffic, DC lets you serve more vehicles per bay and earn per kWh. Your spare electrical load also shapes the choice.
How much power does a DC charger need compared with AC?
More. Our DC models need connected loads from about 34 to 36 kVA for 30 kW up to about 270 to 285 kVA for 240 kW, all on 3-phase 415 V AC. Check your spare capacity first, and plan a DISCOM upgrade if needed.
Which connector do DC chargers use in India?
CCS2 is the standard DC fast-charging connector for electric cars in India, and it is used on electric buses too. All Pristine AACF chargers use CCS2 and cover 150 to 1000 V DC output. Check your target vehicles' charging port and maximum DC charging power before choosing a model.
