OCPP 1.6J vs 2.0.1: What Indian Charger Buyers Need to Know
What OCPP is, how 1.6J and 2.0.1 differ in practice, and why an OCPP charger protects Indian station owners from software lock-in.

OCPP is the open communication standard between an EV charger and its management software; version 1.6J is the widely used JSON-based release, while 2.0.1 is the newer, more structured release. An OCPP charger that supports both, like every Pristine AACF DC fast charger, can connect to standard charge-management platforms today and lets you change platforms later without replacing hardware.
What OCPP does for a station owner
OCPP stands for Open Charge Point Protocol. It is the language a charger uses to talk to a central system: to report that a session started or ended, how much energy was delivered, whether a fault occurred, and to receive commands such as start, stop or reset. Because it is an open standard, any compliant charger can talk to any compliant software.
- Remote monitoring of sessions, energy and faults.
- Connection to payment systems and charge-management platforms.
- Freedom to switch software providers without changing the charger.
- Easier expansion when you add chargers from the same or other brands.
1.6J vs 2.0.1 at a glance
| Point | OCPP 1.6J | OCPP 2.0.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Older, widely used release | Newer release |
| Data format | JSON over WebSocket | JSON over WebSocket, with a reworked message structure |
| Platform support | Supported by most existing charge-management platforms | Supported by a growing number of platforms |
| Device model | Simpler configuration model | More detailed model of the charger and its parts |
| Security and management | Basic, often added by extensions | Built in more fully |
| What it means for you | Connects to most platforms today | Helps future-proof the installation |
The two versions are not directly interchangeable; the charger and the platform must use the same one. That is why supporting both matters.
Which version should you use?
Use whichever version your chosen charge-management platform supports. Many Indian platforms still run on 1.6J, so a charger that speaks 1.6J connects easily today. If your platform supports 2.0.1, or you plan to move to one that does, a charger with 2.0.1 support lets you switch without new hardware. Every Pristine AACF model supports both, from the 30 kW charger to the 180 kW charger.
Do you need a platform at all?
Not necessarily. Pristine AACF chargers take UPI QR payments directly, with collections settling to your bank account and no driver app needed, as explained in our UPI charging guide. OCPP support is there if you want fleet management, multi-site reporting or to list your station on a charging network.
Other specifications to check alongside OCPP
All models have a Class 0.5S DC energy meter, RFID and UPI QR authentication, SiC modular rectifiers with N+1 redundancy, efficiency above 95.5% and IP54 and IK10 outdoor rating. Frequently asked questions
What is an OCPP charger?
An OCPP charger is one that communicates with management software using the Open Charge Point Protocol. It can report sessions, energy delivered and faults to any compliant platform and accept remote commands. Pristine AACF chargers support OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1, so you are not locked into one software provider.
Is OCPP 2.0.1 better than 1.6J?
It is newer, with a more detailed device model and fuller built-in management and security features. But the best version is the one your platform supports, and many platforms still use 1.6J. A charger that supports both lets you connect today and move to 2.0.1 later without replacing hardware.
Can a 1.6J charger talk to a 2.0.1 platform?
Not directly; the charger and the platform must use the same version. That is why dual support matters. Pristine AACF chargers support both 1.6J and 2.0.1, so they can connect to either kind of platform as your needs change.
Do I need OCPP if I only want UPI payments?
No. Pristine AACF chargers take UPI QR payments directly and settle collections to your bank account, with no driver app. OCPP becomes useful when you want remote monitoring across sites, fleet management, or to connect to a charging network or third-party platform.
Does OCPP help with remote monitoring?
Yes. Through OCPP, the charger reports sessions, energy and faults to your platform, and you can send commands such as start, stop or reset. Combined with the N+1 redundant rectifier modules, this helps you spot and handle problems quickly without waiting for a driver complaint.
